Pennsylvanians Can Access Affordable Health Coverage Throughout the Year, and Here Are the Ways They Can Qualify

Mar 21, 2024

Harrisburg, PA – 3/18/24 – Nearly 435,000 Pennsylvanians enrolled in health coverage through Pennie, PA’s official health insurance marketplace, during the 2024 Open Enrollment Period which closed in January. Here is how Pennsylvanians can still enroll in quality, affordable health coverage throughout the year. Learn how below.

Experiencing a Major Life Change
Pennsylvanians can enroll in coverage if they lose coverage (job coverage or Medicaid), move, have a baby, or get married. These are called qualifying life events that open a shopping window or a “special enrollment period.” Click here to learn about other qualifying life events. Special Enrollment Periods are only open for a limited time from the date of the life event, so anyone looking for coverage should act quickly.

Loss of Medicaid (Medical Assistance)
For anyone who is no longer eligible for Medicaid, there is a limited time after Medicaid coverage ends to enroll through Pennie. Pennsylvanians who no longer qualify for Medicaid because of changes in income can see large savings on private health plans through Pennie. 1 in 2 families who enroll through Pennie after losing Medicaid pay less than $50/month, and 1 in 5 pay less than a dollar per month. Click here to learn more or follow the steps in a letter sent by Pennie.

Path to Pennie
Through tax time, there is a special opportunity to enroll in coverage even without a qualifying life event. By filling out a specific state tax form, Pennie will open a special enrollment period after receiving the form from the PA Department of Revenue. All you need to do is complete PA Tax Form REV-1882 ‘Health Insurance Coverage Information Request’ and you will receive information on next steps to enroll in health coverage through Pennie and an estimate of your financial savings. Learn more at Path to Pennie | Pennie.

Income Based Enrollment
Pennsylvanians at certain income levels can enroll year-round in free, comprehensive health plans through Pennie. Households that qualify have an annual income at or below 150% federal poverty level, which is $21,870 for 1 person and $45,000 for a family of 4. Anyone in this category who does not have health coverage should complete an application as soon as possible.

When in Doubt, Reach out!
Anyone without health coverage can explore affordable, quality health coverage options through pennie.com or call Pennie Customer Service at 1-844-844-8040. Current Pennie customers should update their Pennie account throughout the year, especially if household size or income changes.
